The village comprises the following settlements: Epano (Upper) Elounta, Kato (Lower) Elounda, Mavrikiano, Skisma, Epano (Upper) and Kato (Lower) Pines. The area is well known for its unique beauty and its abidance in fish. Elounda is also known for its whetstone mines, the only ones of their kind, famous throughout Europe since antiquity. The stones have been known as “Turquei stones”.

The main sources of income were fish and farming, but this has been changing due to the rapid increase of tourism during the last 10 years.
